Prostate Cancer Treatment

Prostate cancer treatment the conventional way is often controversial. Treatment options vary based on the stage of the tumor.

Approaches to treatment include waiting to see whether the cancer is growing slowly and not causing symptoms; surgery to remove the entire prostate and surrounding tissues; and internal and external radiation therapy, both of which use high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Hormone therapy and chemotherapy drugs are approved to treat the various advanced stages of cancer.

In the early stages, surgery and radiation may be used to remove or kill the tumor.

Prostate cancer that has spread may be treated with drugs to reduce testosterone levels, surgery to remove the testes, or chemotherapy.

Surgery, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapy can interfere with sexual desire or performance on either a temporary or permanent basis. Discuss your concerns with your doctor.

Surgery is usually only recommended after thorough evaluation and discussion of all available treatment options.

Anyone considering surgery should be aware of the benefits and risks of the procedure.

Radiation therapy is used primarily for prostate cancer treatment classified as stages A, B, or C.

Whether radiation is as good as prostate removal is debatable and the decision about which to choose can be difficult.

In patients whose health makes the risk of surgery unacceptably high, radiation therapy is often the preferred alternative.

Radiation therapy to the prostate gland is either an external or internal prostate cancer treatment.

Medicines can be used to adjust the levels of testosterone; called hormonal manipulation.

Since prostate tumors require testosterone to grow, reducing the testosterone level is used to preventing further growth and spread of the cancer.

Hormone manipulation is mainly used as a treatment to relieve symptoms in men whose cancer has spread.

Besides drugs, hormone manipulation may also be done by surgically removing the testes.

Some drugs with numerous side effects are being used as advanced prostate cancer treatment  blocking the production of testosterone called chemical castration, because it has the same result as surgical removal of the testes.

Other medications used for hormonal therapy, with side effects, include androgen-blocking agents  which prevent testosterone from attaching to prostate cells.

Chemotherapy medications are often used to treat prostate cancers that are resistant to hormonal treatments.

For prostate cancer treatment an oncology specialist will usually recommend treating with a single drug or a combination of drugs.

After the first round of chemotherapy, most men receive further doses on an outpatient basis at a clinic or physician's office.

Side effects of chemotherapy drugs depend on how often and how long they are taken.

Impotence is a potential complication after prostatectomy or radiation therapy.

Recent improvements in surgical procedures have made complication occur less often.

Urinary incontinence is another possible complication of surgery.

Medications can have side effects, including hot flashes and loss of sexual desire.

This is just a simple explanation of prostate cancer tests.

Prostate cancer treatment leaves  a lot to be desired today. Many men are seklig natrual approaches to prostate cancer treatment.
